Purpose of GTT
This test is used to diagnose diabetes specially to screen for type 2 diabetes also can be used to diagnose gestational diabetes (during pregnancy). This test mainly checks the abnormalities of glucose in your blood before fasting and after meal.
- A woman is having diabetes during pregnancy and
her glucose level is corrected after pregnancyshe will be also tested for thistest - Individuals who have diabetes in their urine but have no symptoms
- People with a family history of diabetes
- Individuals who do not have any symptoms of diabetes But the examination of their eyes or the kidneys showed a change of sugar Later if there are symptoms of narrowing of the blood vessels So this test is a mandatory for them
- Individuals who have not been the glucose level normal in their past
- People who are obese
Preparation of GTT
Make sure to eat and drink normally for some days before this test.- Ask your doctor, if you having medication or having a critical disease such as throat cancer or any other because critical disease or having medication can affect your body and the test result
as well . - Don't eat or drink for 08 hours before the test.
You might want to fast overnight.
Procedure of OGTT
- First,
minimum 1 ml blood from the vein having fasting.is taken The patient is given about 75 grams of glucose mixed with water
- An hour later, Patient's sample
is taken (Labelled as 1st sample). - Now every hour a blood sample
is taken anda total of five samples are obtained.
